Hybrid elections: online and in-person

Las Brisas Royal Golf Club is located in the heart of Spain’s Costa del Sol. It is an exclusive club with outstanding facilities where members can enjoy the best golfing experience on the "Costa del Golf" in Marbella. A vibrant and welcoming social atmosphere, combined with attentive service, makes Las Brisas one of the top golf clubs in Spain.

With numerous shareholders, this public limited company follows a democratic governance system and elects its board of directors through personal, free, direct and secret ballot. Given the club’s international shareholder base, it was essential to enable remote voting. At the same time, to better support those voters who were in Málaga during the election, in-person voting stations were set up with dedicated devices where shareholders could cast their votes.

Training for the electoral board members

Kuorum offers different service levels tailored to each client’s needs. Many golf clubs use our technology to carry out their elections, AGMs and shareholders' meetings. The service conditions vary greatly depending on the client’s capacity to manage the different stages of each process. In the case of the elections at Real Club de Golf Las Brisas, the organization had an electoral board made up of five members responsible for ensuring the transparency and security of the election.

Once the candidate registration period had closed, Kuorum provided training for the board members. This training covered both technical and operational aspects: cleaning and uploading the voter list, sending out invitations and reminders, assisting voters both on-site and remotely, resolving incidents, and opening the ballot box. Kuorum’s technology allows golf clubs and other sports organizations to manage their elections and assemblies independently and with the highest level of guarantees.

Security and usability go hand in hand

One of the main concerns organizations face when implementing electronic voting—whether in-person or remote—is whether their voters will be able to complete the process without issues. At Kuorum, we’ve been running these types of votes for over ten years, and our technology is the result of continuous usability improvements throughout that time. That’s why voters of all ages and digital skill levels are able to cast their vote independently.

The two-factor identification process is similar to what we use when making an online purchase or accessing a bank account. It represents the highest level of security according to electronic identification regulations, yet it’s simple enough for anyone to complete without difficulties. Once this step is completed, the voter only has to select their preferred options and click a button to vote. Kuorum’s technology encrypts the vote on the voter’s device, thereby anonymizing it before it is registered on our servers. The homomorphic property of the applied cryptography allows us to count the votes without ever knowing how each individual voted.

Instant results

Ballot counting is one of the most tedious processes—and one with the highest margin for error—in paper-based elections. With Kuorum, the electoral board can access the final results just seconds after the electronic ballot box is opened. Our records are immutable thanks to timestamping technology. In the event of a challenge, a judge or an expert can certify the accuracy of the results without knowing how each person voted.
